GE HealthCare Unveils AI-Driven Digital X-ray System to Boost Efficiency and Accessibility
GE HealthCare has announced the commercial launch of Definium™ Pace Select ET, an advanced digital X-ray system designed to enhance workflow efficiency and access to imaging in high-volume clinical settings. This new floor-mounted solution aims to address growing demands on radiology departments by combining intelligent automation with high-quality imaging capabilities.
X-ray remains the most commonly used diagnostic imaging modality, accounting for 60% of all scans. However, radiology departments face mounting pressures due to staffing shortages, technologist burnout, and rising patient volumes. GE HealthCare’s latest innovation seeks to alleviate these challenges by acting as a “personal assistant” to technologists, automating repetitive in-room tasks and reducing the physical demands of image acquisition.
Powered by AI, the system supports precise patient positioning and delivers consistent image quality across a range of clinical scenarios. These features are especially valuable in environments where radiology teams must maintain high throughput without compromising diagnostic accuracy or patient care.
The Definium Pace Select ET builds upon GE HealthCare’s established Definium platform and includes a motorized, floor-mounted design with an elevating table, intuitive in-room controls, and a shared user interface. The system’s Intelligent Workflow Suite proactively manages tasks such as patient positioning, protocol selection, and collimation—all with quality checks before image exposure to reduce errors.
“With this launch, we’re supporting technologists at every experience level by reducing workflow steps and optimizing ergonomics,” said Sharad Sharma, Global General Manager for X-ray at GE HealthCare. “Our goal is to consistently make the first image count.”
Designed in response to customer feedback, the system also integrates Helix™ Advanced Image Processing to reduce image variability and deliver consistently high-quality diagnostics—at a cost-effective price point typically reserved for more premium overhead tube suspension (OTS) systems.
According to Jyoti Gupta, PhD, President & CEO of Women’s Health and X-ray at GE HealthCare, “Definium Pace Select ET reflects our broader commitment to make high-quality imaging more accessible, while using digital and AI-powered tools to ease the burden on radiology staff and improve patient care.”
