The update introduces artificial intelligence across Ion’s navigation workflow and integrates new advanced imaging capabilities, strengthening its precision and usability in diagnosing lung cancer.

The Ion system uses an ultra-thin, shape-sensing catheter that allows physicians to navigate deep into the lungs and access small or difficult-to-reach nodules. Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, and early, accurate diagnosis is vital to improving survival rates. Intuitive’s latest software release aims to enhance diagnostic consistency and efficiency through AI-driven navigation support.

A central innovation in this update is AI-powered enhanced navigation, designed to address a common issue known as CT-to-body divergence, where a lung nodule shifts position between preoperative scans and the actual procedure. By combining computer vision with Ion’s shape-sensing technology, the system can detect and correct for these shifts in real time—comparable to how a GPS recalibrates a route when conditions change. This feature is expected to improve procedural accuracy, reduce manual adjustments, and streamline biopsy workflows.

The software also expands advanced imaging capabilities, including the introduction of integrated tomosynthesis. This feature allows for real-time imaging updates using a standard 2D C-arm, offering hospitals a practical alternative where 3D imaging resources are limited. By enabling tailored workflows based on individual patient needs, the system is designed to increase flexibility across diverse clinical settings.

Intuitive will initially roll out the new software through a limited release to collect performance data across various healthcare environments, with a broader U.S. launch planned for 2026. As of June 2025, more than 900 Ion systems were installed in hospitals across 10 countries, supported by over 100 published studies and abstracts documenting its clinical impact. The company continues to sponsor extensive research, including observational studies involving over 2,000 participants in Europe and the U.S., reinforcing its commitment to advancing precision in lung cancer diagnosis and patient outcomes globally.

Intuitive has received FDA clearance for new AI and imaging capabilities in its Ion robotic-assisted bronchoscopy platform, improving accuracy in lung biopsies.

[7,25,677
687,758
post-36076","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-americas","category-products-technologies","category-surgical","tag-fda","tag-robotics
["GET
