Fudan University Launches China’s First Spinal Tumor Research Institute and International Journal BBRCR
On November 2, Shanghai-based Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University announced the official establishment of the Spinal Tumor Research Institute and the launch of Bone and Bone Related Cancer Research (BBRCR), the nation’s first international English-language journal dedicated to spinal tumor studies. The twin platforms aim to integrate basic research, clinical practice, and global collaboration to advance China’s position in spinal oncology research and treatment.
With the aging population driving a steady increase in spinal tumor incidence, the disease presents unique challenges due to its complexity, subtle onset, and potential for severe disability. Since 2014, Zhongshan Hospital has implemented a multidisciplinary treatment (MDT) model for spinal metastatic tumors and, in 2019, established China’s first comprehensive spinal tumor diagnosis and treatment center. Over the past five years, the hospital’s spinal tumor surgeries have grown by approximately 20% annually, forming a refined and systematic clinical model.
The inaugural ceremony gathered leading experts from major hospitals and research institutions across the country. Professor Jian Zhou, President of Zhongshan Hospital, emphasized that founding the institute reflects Fudan’s commitment to the national “Healthy China” initiative and will enhance the nation’s academic influence in spinal oncology. Professor Jian Dong, the institute’s founding director and BBRCR’s Editor-in-Chief, stated that the institute will focus on the mechanisms, precise diagnosis, and innovative therapies of spinal tumors, transforming research outcomes into clinical benefits for patients.
Positioned as a high-standard international publication, BBRCR is dedicated to original studies in bone and bone-related cancer research. Its inaugural editorial board features more than 20 distinguished scholars from China and abroad. The journal aims to promote high-quality academic exchange and strengthen China’s global voice in this specialized field.
Looking ahead, the Fudan University Spinal Tumor Research Institute plans to build an interdisciplinary innovation hub that fosters collaboration and accelerates breakthroughs in spinal tumor diagnosis and treatment, contributing to more effective, patient-centered care worldwide.
