Beijing Launches Medical-Engineering Proof-of-Concept Base to Accelerate Domestic MedTech Innovation

A new medical-engineering proof-of-concept base was officially unveiled in Beijing on October 20, marking a coordinated effort to accelerate the commercialization of early-stage medical technologies in China. The initiative is led by Zhongguancun (ZGC) Development Group in partnership with Beijing Tsinghua Changgung Hospital, which is affiliated with Tsinghua University.

The new base aims to bridge clinical needs with engineering research by combining the hospital’s clinical experience, Tsinghua University’s engineering expertise, and ZGC’s industrial service capabilities. Together, they will provide a full innovation pipeline spanning basic research, technology validation, incubation, and industrial implementation. The model is designed to shorten the gap between scientific discovery and practical application in the life sciences and health sectors.

The base has already begun supporting its first batch of 23 projects, including an AI-enabled surgical imaging robot and an electro-pneumatic micro-volume spray system for precision medical applications. These early projects aim to address unmet clinical needs in specialized segments of the medical device market, with the expectation that several will progress toward commercialization.

During the launch event, the two parties also signed a cooperation agreement to jointly advance scientific translation, strengthen talent development, and build a broader innovation ecosystem for medical technology. Their shared goal is to support the transition of research from concept to prototype and ultimately to market-ready products, helping elevate the level of domestic engineering innovation in medical devices.
