Wandong Medical Partners with CAS Institute to Advance High-Field, Helium-Free MRI Technology

Beijing-based Wandong Medical has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with the Institute of Electrical Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) to co-develop domestically produced high-field, liquid helium-free MRI systems. The partnership aligns with China’s broader push to strengthen self-reliant innovation in high-end medical technology and reduce dependence on imported core components.

The collaboration will combine the institute’s expertise in superconducting magnets, cryogenics, gradient coil design, and electromagnetic field research with Wandong Medical’s experience in MRI system engineering, manufacturing, and clinical translation. By integrating research strengths with commercialization capabilities, both parties aim to accelerate breakthroughs in key MRI technologies and advance industrial applications.

High-field, helium-free MRI is considered a strategic area of development due to its potential to overcome reliance on scarce cryogenic resources while improving system stability and operational efficiency. Progress in this field is expected to influence the global MRI market by reducing manufacturing costs and enabling wider access to high-end imaging.

The partnership will focus on an end-to-end collaboration model that spans basic research, technology development, product validation and future industrial rollout. According to the parties, the goal is to establish a sustainable innovation pipeline that supports both clinical adoption and long-term technological leadership.

By deepening cooperation between industry and national research institutes, Wandong Medical aims to help build a domestically controlled MRI technology ecosystem and support China’s ambitions in next-generation medical imaging innovation.
