Olympus Receives FDA Clearance for Next-Gen EDOF™ Endoscopes with Enhanced Imaging Capabilities
Olympus has announced FDA 510(k) clearance for its latest EZ1500 series endoscopes, integrating Extended Depth of Field (EDOF™) technology as part of the EVIS X1™ endoscopy system. The GIF-EZ1500 gastroscope and CF-EZ1500DL/I colonoscope utilize dual-prism optics to simultaneously capture near- and far-focused images, merging them into a single high-definition view with minimal focal adjustment. This advancement allows clinicians to maintain sharp visualization of entire lesions during GI tract examinations, potentially improving detection rates. Compared to previous models, the EDOF scopes reduce blurring at closer distances (3mm vs. 5mm) and eliminate frequent mode switching, while remaining compatible with TXI™, RDI™, and NBI™ enhancement technologies when paired with the EVIS X1 system.
The new scopes also incorporate ergonomic improvements, including a 10% lighter ErgoGrip™ control section designed for enhanced maneuverability and reduced operator fatigue. These refinements complement Olympus’ broader EVIS X1 platform, which integrates multiple imaging modalities—such as Texture and Color Enhancement Imaging (TXI) and Red Dichromatic Imaging (RDI)—to optimize lesion characterization and vascular visualization. Kurt Heine, Olympus’ SVP of Gastrointestinal Solutions, emphasized the technology’s role in elevating endoscopic standards and supporting clinical decision-making, though the system’s imaging enhancements remain adjunctive to histopathological diagnosis.
