Cytovale Secures $100 Million in Series D Funding to Transform Early Sepsis Detection

Cytovale, a South San Francisco, CA-based leading medical diagnostics company focused on early detection technologies, has announced the successful completion of a $100 million Series D funding round, spearheaded by Sands Capital. This funding also saw participation from the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPP Investments) and existing investors such as Norwest Venture Partners, Global Health Investment Corporation, and Breakout Ventures. The investment will enable Cytovale to expand the commercial reach of its innovative IntelliSep test, aimed at enhancing early sepsis detection in emergency departments (EDs) across the United States.
Sepsis remains a critical challenge in healthcare, with over 80% of cases presenting in EDs where timely diagnosis is crucial. “Cytovale’s IntelliSep test has demonstrated the ability to save lives and reduce costs by providing an effective diagnostic tool for rapid triage,” said Parker Cassidy, partner at Sands Capital. The IntelliSep is the first FDA-cleared cellular host diagnostic specifically designed for use in EDs, delivering results in approximately eight minutes. This groundbreaking test allows clinicians to assess the biological indicators of sepsis, enabling faster and more accurate patient-centered care.
Since its launch in August 2023 at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, IntelliSep has shown significant clinical impact. Dr. Christopher Thomas, chief quality officer at Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System, noted, “IntelliSep has transformed our ability to triage and diagnose suspected infection patients, leading to earlier treatment initiation and a remarkable 30% decrease in the risk-adjusted mortality index for sepsis.” With patients tested by IntelliSep experiencing a reduction of 1.28 hospital days and an average savings of $1,400 per patient, Cytovale’s CEO, Ajay Shah, PhD, emphasized the potential of IntelliSep to revolutionize sepsis care, likening its impact to that of troponin tests in cardiac care. The recent funding will further support Cytovale’s rapid scaling to meet the growing demand for effective sepsis solutions across health systems nationwide.
