Avandra Acquires DatCard and Sorna to Build Global Medical Imaging Platform

Avandra Health has acquired DatCard Systems and Sorna Corporation in a move aimed at creating what it describes as the most comprehensive medical imaging platform for both clinical care and research. The company, known for operating a large federated network for medical imaging and clinical data, plans to integrate the two businesses’ established data-sharing technologies with its own de-identified data aggregation infrastructure.
DatCard is widely used for distributing DICOM studies between providers, supporting continuity of care across more than 4,800 installations of its PacsCube system worldwide. Sorna has a long history in automated medical data distribution and offers a broad product suite through its Vertex Platform, which includes cloud-based sharing, automated DICOM media creation and intelligent routing tools. Together, the two companies serve many U.S. academic medical centers, including over half of National Cancer Institute sites.
Avandra CEO Ryan Tarzy said the acquisitions position the organization to support both clinical and research workflows within a unified framework. “By bringing together DatCard, Sorna, and Avandra, we’re creating the industry’s first comprehensive medical imaging platform that serves both immediate patient care needs and long-term research innovation,” he said. Tarzy added that customers should expect continued support from the existing teams and uninterrupted access to current products.
DatCard and Sorna will continue operating as independent entities under the Avandra umbrella, with plans for increased investment in product development and customer support. Sorna founder Cyrus Samari said the company sought a partner that valued its long-standing customer relationships and workforce. “Ryan’s forward-looking vision, coupled with the talented Avandra team, created the perfect alignment,” he said.
Avandra, founded in 2024 by Aegis Ventures and Tarzy, aims to make medical imaging data more accessible for biopharma, healthcare providers, researchers and AI developers. The company sees the integrations as a step toward addressing long-standing challenges in accessing imaging data, which often remains locked in legacy systems and limits its use in research and innovation.
