Boston Scientific to Establish First Greater China Manufacturing Base in Shanghai

Boston Scientific officially announced on 9 October that it will establish its first Greater China manufacturing base in Shanghai Lin-gang Special Area, an important part of its comprehensive localization strategy in China.

Boston Scientific will work together to promote the development of China’s medical innovation ecosystem from all aspects of the industry chain, including trade, production, R&D, investment, and services. The medical devices produced at Boston Scientific’s Shanghai manufacturing base will be mainly supplied to the Chinese market, helping to improve the accessibility of cutting-edge medical technologies through domestic manufacturing.

Biopharmaceutical is one of the three leading industries in Shanghai’s building world-class industrial clusters, according to the Three-Year Action Plan for Promoting High-Quality Development of Manufacturing Industry (2023-2025) issued by Shanghai Municipal Government in June, 2023. Boston Scientific’s localization strategy in China fits perfectly with the development goals of Shanghai’s biomedical industry.

In a meeting with Jining Chen, Secretary of the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee, Michael F. Mahoney, Chairman and CEO of Boston Scientific, said that Boston Scientific’s commitment to the Chinese market has never changed and that the company has full confidence in China’s future development. The company will continue to increase investment, expand R&D, training, clinical research and manufacturing in Shanghai, deepen pragmatic cooperation with Chinese partners, and make positive contributions to the development of the healthcare industry.

Michael F. Mahoney was joined by a number of Shanghai officials, including Jinshan Chen, Member of the Standing Committee of the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee, Jincheng Wu, Director of the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatisation, and Lai Xu, Director General of the Shanghai Medical Products Administration, at the signing ceremony of Boston Scientific manufacturing base Lin-gang project.
