Lumicell Unveils LumiSystem in U.S. for Real-Time Breast Cancer Detection During Surgery

Lumicell has announced the U.S. commercial launch and first use of its LumiSystem™. This innovative system combines LUMISIGHT™, an optical imaging agent, and the Lumicell™ Direct Visualization System (DVS), an imaging device. Both products, which recently received FDA approval, work together to illuminate cancerous tissues in real time during lumpectomy surgeries.

LumiSystem™ revolutionizes breast cancer surgery by enabling surgeons to visualize and excise cancerous tissues during the operation itself, rather than assessing them post-surgery. This immediate detection helps ensure more complete cancer removal and potentially reduces the need for additional surgical interventions.

“We are all too familiar with the constraints of lumpectomy and the often necessary discussions about subsequent surgeries due to incomplete initial cancer removal,” stated Irene Wapnir, MD, Professor of Surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine and Director of Breast Cancer Surgical Clinical Research at the Stanford Cancer Institute. “The adoption of LumiSystem™ at Stanford represents a significant advancement in our surgical capabilities, enhancing our ability to excise cancerous tissue effectively while conserving healthy tissue.”

LumiSystem™ demonstrated an 84% diagnostic accuracy and enhanced surgical outcomes for 10% of patients in the INSITE pivotal trial by identifying cancerous tissues that were previously undetected by surgeons and pathologists. This system offers a transformative approach to breast-conserving surgery, significantly improving patient treatment.
