Santa Clara, CA-based OMNIVISION has announced the availability of several new OVMed ultra-thin medical-grade LED cable modules designed for single-use endoscopes. The turnkey solutions integrate an image sensor with wafer-level optics, illumination, and cabling, providing a cost-effective approach for medical endoscope manufacturers seeking to accelerate product development and reduce time-to-market.

The new modules support OCHTA, OCHFA, OCHSA, and OCH2B CameraCubeChip devices and are designed for a wide range of medical endoscopes, including ophthalmoscopes, nasopharyngoscopes, bronchoscopes, angioscopes, nephroscopes, ureteroscopes, choledochoscopes, spinoscopes, duodenoscopes, gastroscopes, laparoscopes, proctoscopes, cystoscopes, hysteroscopes, utero-renoscopes, colonoscopes, and arthroscopes.

The modules are engineered to provide high image quality with minimal artifacts for transmitting captured images from the endoscope’s distal tip down the shaft to the proximal end. They are optimized for small module size, thin diameter, flexibility, mechanical robustness, and cost. The cable modules also include EMC and EMI shielding in compliance with IEC 60601 requirements, enabling the cables to withstand high-energy discharges during multimodal procedures while preventing interference with other medical devices.

Thomas Xu, senior medical product marketing manager at OMNIVISION, said the medical industry is moving toward smaller, higher-resolution CMOS chip-on-tip endoscopes with LED illumination and ultra-thin cable modules capable of reaching deeper inside the body. He noted that medical endoscope manufacturers need flexibility to customize designs for specific procedures. As a leading image sensor provider in the medical field, OMNIVISION is addressing customer demand for turnkey imaging solutions through its OVMed family of cable modules and image signal processors. He added that the compact, ultra-thin, customizable modules are medical-grade tested and ready for integration, reducing design and testing time while simplifying the supply chain.

OMNIVISION offers customization options based on customer requirements, including camera type, cable type, end connectors, LED illumination, and distal tip geometry. The company’s high-volume production capabilities enable cost-effective solutions, while its standardized catalog products help customers achieve faster development turnaround and quicker time to market.

The OVMed cable modules are medical-grade components that undergo comprehensive certification and testing, including operational tests, stress tests, banned substance screening, EMI/EMC testing, sterilization validation, biocompatibility assessment, workmanship inspection, and waterproofing verification. All modules are manufactured in ISO 13485-certified facilities, which increases the likelihood and speed of FDA certification for medical endoscope manufacturers while providing healthcare professionals and patients with confidence in the devices. The OCHTA10, OCHFA10, OCHFA20, OCHSA10, and OCH2B10 cable modules and evaluation kits are available now.
