Akura Medical has closed a $53 million first round of Series C financing led by the Qatar Investment Authority. The funds will be used to support the development activities for the Katana™ Thrombectomy System and the NavIQ™ quantification software, completion of enrollment in the QUADRA-PE clinical trial and regulatory submissions. The company plans to establish a joint venture in Qatar with the funds.

Acting CEO and Shifamed founder Amr Salahieh said the financing will help accelerate progress across Akura’s pipeline. “Akura Medical is advancing a differentiated portfolio of venous thrombectomy technologies aimed at improving procedural precision and patient outcomes,” he said. He added that the company’s newly introduced NavIQ software “represents the next step toward intelligent, data-driven thrombectomy,” noting that the capital provides momentum for long-term growth.

Akura’s portfolio centers on the Katana system, which is designed to remove a range of clot types while reducing catheter clogging and providing real-time procedural information. The system uses high-velocity saline jets intended to break down clot structures regardless of morphology and incorporates sensors that track pulmonary artery pressure during treatment. NavIQ, the company’s complementary software platform, converts CT angiography data into 3D vascular models for anatomical visualization and procedure planning. It also aims to provide clot characterization that may help physicians determine treatment priorities.

Venous thromboembolism remains a major health concern and is the third leading cause of cardiovascular death in the United States. Akura, a privately held Shifamed portfolio company, continues to position its technologies as potential tools for improving pulmonary embolism care, though the Katana system remains investigational and is not yet cleared for sale in any market.

Shifamed, the medical innovation hub founded by Salahieh, supports Akura and several other early-stage companies focused on accelerating the development of interventional and diagnostic technologies.
