GE HealthCare Introduces Next-Generation SIGNA MRI Systems with AI-Driven Workflow and Sustainable Design

GE HealthCare has outlined the next phase of its MRI portfolio with the introduction of two SIGNA systems, SIGNA Bolt and SIGNA Sprint with Freelium, both now under FDA 510(k) review. Presented at RSNA 2025, the technologies aim to address several mounting pressures in MRI services, including growing imaging demand, workforce shortages and aging equipment. The company frames the new lineup as an effort to support more efficient, sustainable and accessible MRI operations.

Kelly Londy, President and CEO of GE HealthCare’s MR business, said the need for improved MRI capacity is becoming increasingly urgent as radiology teams struggle with rising caseloads. “The urgency for greater access, efficiency and precision in MRI has never been greater,” she said. “With the introduction of our advanced SIGNA lineup, we’re delivering on a bold vision for MRI — one that intentionally puts smarter technology to work for clinicians and patients alike.”

SIGNA Bolt is positioned as GE HealthCare’s most advanced wide-bore 3T MRI system to date. Designed with a next-generation gradient system, intelligent digital RF architecture and support for deep learning applications, the scanner aims to deliver high-precision imaging and faster workflows. The system is intended for both clinical and research environments, with features that include AI-enabled exam acceleration, tools for neurology and oncology pathways and an upgraded developer environment for research teams.

SIGNA Sprint with Freelium brings a different focus: sustainability and broader access. The 1.5T system uses less than 1% of the helium required by conventional MRI magnets, supported by GE HealthCare’s sealed Freelium design. The ventless magnet allows installation in a wider range of clinical settings, including facilities without traditional infrastructure for MR systems. Despite the helium reduction, the scanner is engineered to provide high homogeneity, strong signal-to-noise performance and broad compatibility with GE HealthCare’s deep learning–based reconstruction tools. It also incorporates two levels of operational autonomy, including a simplified user interface and an automated magnet recovery function.

Both systems run on SIGNA One, a new AI-powered workflow platform designed to streamline the entire MRI exam. The platform introduces tools for automated patient positioning, contactless physiological monitoring, and real-time visual guidance through in-room touchscreen consoles. Bryan Mock, PhD, General Manager for Global Product Segment, Premium MR, said the goal is to support users at every experience level. “SIGNA One technology is designed to simplify and improve the efficiency of experienced users, while aiming to shorten the learning curve for new users,” he said.

GE HealthCare is also expanding its collaboration with NVIDIA to accelerate development of deep learning reconstruction models using NVIDIA GPUs. The integration is intended to support the performance and intelligence of both new SIGNA systems as they move toward commercial readiness. The company is showcasing the technology at its RSNA booth through December 4.
