Northampton General Hospital
Northampton General Hospital (NGH) is a major acute hospital serving a population of approximately 426,500 residents across West Northamptonshire. It provides a comprehensive range of general acute healthcare services and is a key regional provider of hyper-acute stroke, vascular, and renal care for the wider Northamptonshire population. As an accredited cancer centre, NGH also delivers specialist oncology services to around 880,000 people across Northamptonshire and parts of Buckinghamshire. In addition to its main site near Northampton town centre, NGH operates outpatient and day surgery services at Danetre Hospital in Daventry, extending access to care across the region.
The hospital offers the full continuum of healthcare services, including outpatient care, diagnostics, inpatient and day case procedures, elective surgery, and emergency treatment. NGH continues to strengthen its specialist portfolio through advancements in hyper-acute and minimally invasive surgery, with significant developments in urological cancer and laparoscopic colorectal surgery establishing the hospital as a regional leader in these fields. While primarily focused on NHS care, the hospital also provides a small amount of private healthcare.
Education and workforce development are central to NGH’s mission. The hospital plays a vital role in training a wide range of healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, therapists, and scientists. Its training and development department offers an extensive array of clinical and non-clinical programs, supported by modern facilities and digital learning platforms, ensuring that staff across both hospital and community settings are equipped to deliver high-quality care.
NGH operates as part of the University Hospitals of Northamptonshire (UHN) group alongside Kettering General Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (KGH). Together, the two hospitals provide core services such as emergency and maternity care while collaborating closely on clinical, academic, and operational initiatives. Since the formation of UHN in 2021, the partnership has focused on innovation and integration, achieving University Hospital status to enhance research opportunities, staff development, and patient access to new treatments. Joint efforts are ongoing in areas such as Head and Neck, ENT, and the establishment of a Cardiology Centre of Excellence for Northamptonshire.
Through collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement, Northampton General Hospital remains dedicated to delivering the highest standards of care, education, and research to its community and beyond.
