Profile

Unity Health Toronto is one of Canada’s largest Catholic healthcare networks, dedicated to serving patients, residents, and clients across the full continuum of care. Formed through the unification of Providence Healthcare, St. Joseph’s Health Centre, and St. Michael’s Hospital, the network delivers services ranging from primary and community care to highly specialized tertiary and quaternary treatments, as well as post-acute rehabilitation, palliative, and long-term care. Alongside its commitment to compassionate care, Unity Health Toronto invests deeply in world-class research, medical education, and innovation to advance health outcomes for communities in Toronto and beyond.

St. Joseph’s Health Centre Toronto has served southwest Toronto’s diverse communities for over a century. As a Catholic community teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Toronto, it is recognized for its exemplary standards by Accreditation Canada and provides comprehensive healthcare with a strong emphasis on education and community well-being. St. Michael’s Hospital, affectionately known as the Urban Angel, is a leading Catholic teaching and research hospital in downtown Toronto. It is the city’s adult trauma centre and a hub for neurosurgery, complex cardiac and vascular care, diabetes and osteoporosis management, minimally invasive surgery, and outreach to the homeless and disadvantaged. The hospital is home to the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, where cutting-edge research and academic excellence drive advancements in medical practice and patient care across 29 disciplines. Providence Healthcare complements these institutions as a leader in rehabilitation, palliative care, long-term care, and community health. Through its hospital, long-term care home, and adult day program, Providence provides innovative care to more than 5,000 individuals annually.

Founded over 130 years ago by the Sisters of St. Joseph, Unity Health Toronto continues to embody its founding values of compassion, dignity, and respect for every individual. As a Catholic healthcare organization, it upholds a deep commitment to the intrinsic value of each person, offering patients not only medical excellence but also emotional, ethical, and spiritual support. Care decisions are guided by the best available medical evidence and respect for each patient’s rights, beliefs, and values.

Unity Health Toronto also works closely with partners across Ontario’s healthcare system to ensure coordinated and seamless access to specialty services. When patients require care not provided within the network, the organization facilitates safe and timely transfers in collaboration with trusted external providers. This integrated, patient-centered approach ensures that every individual receives the right care at the right time in the most appropriate setting.

Education and continuous learning are central to Unity Health Toronto’s mission. The network fosters a culture of collaboration, inclusivity, and innovation, encouraging diverse perspectives to improve patient outcomes and enhance ethical decision-making. By partnering with patients, learners, and healthcare professionals, Unity Health Toronto remains at the forefront of compassionate, evidence-based care and continues to shape the future of healthcare delivery in Canada.
