AlphaStar Medical Completes Angel Round Financing to Advance Shape Memory Polymer Vascular Intervention Platform

亚太地区心血管器械战略发展

AlphaStar Medical, a vascular interventional medical device company based in Hangzhou city, East China, has announced the completion of its angel round of financing from Taiyuan Pharmaceutical and Hangzhou Runmiao Fund to support core product animal trials and preclinical research. The funds will also be used to accelerate the construction of a GMP manufacturing and R&D facility and quality system certification, which will lay the groundwork for subsequent clinical trials and commercialization.

Founded in 2024, AlphaStar Medical is led by a team of materials experts and industry veterans with nearly 20 years of experience in vascular implantable and interventional medical device R&D and entrepreneurship. The company’s chief scientist, Professor Wu Jingjun, holds a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Zhejiang University and is a recipient of the National Excellent Young Scientist Award. His expertise in shape memory polymers and 3D/4D printing provides a solid theoretical foundation for the company’s technology platform. Founder Zhou Qimeng, who holds a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Zhejiang University, has accumulated nearly 20 years of R&D and entrepreneurial experience, having previously served as R&D manager at Zylox-Tonbridge and as a co-founder of Matrix Medical and Exceed Medical.

The company’s core product is a shape memory polymer vascular embolization system. Currently, only one overseas company has a presence in this space, making AlphaStar Medical the first Chinese innovator to enter the field. Compared with conventional metal coil embolization devices, the product can rapidly return to its preset shape at body temperature, achieving adaptive dense filling of target blood vessels. The technology is designed to address clinical pain points including poor immediate embolization outcomes, imaging artifact interference, long-term recanalization risk, and vascular damage.

Professor Zhang Hongkun, Director of the Department of Vascular Surgery at the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine (FAHZU), noted that postoperative endoleak and false lumen embolization following aortic aneurysm and aortic dissection repair have long been clinical challenges. He said the innovative SMP embolization product, with its favorable filling performance and long-term safety profile, holds promise as a quality solution to these clinical pain points. Early R&D results have validated the company’s core shape memory polymer material system, with animal studies demonstrating a 100% occlusion success rate at 90 days post-implantation, along with partial material degradation and favorable tissue integration. The company has filed 13 patents related to its core technology, establishing a technological moat for subsequent clinical translation and market competition.

Taiyuan Pharmaceutical stated that against the backdrop of an aging population, there is significant unmet demand and domestic substitution potential in the vascular embolization space. Taiyuan Pharmaceutical added that AlphaStar Medical’s application of SMP smart materials to vascular embolization devices represents a true breakthrough in underlying materials technology, fundamentally addressing long-standing clinical pain points including imaging artifacts, poor immediate embolization outcomes, and chronic inflammation risk. Hangzhou Runmiao Fund commented that AlphaStar Medical, with its leading domestic SMP materials platform, is entering a field long dominated by metal materials. The fund noted that the company’s core pipeline targets major unmet clinical needs including post-stent-graft endoleak and aortic dissection false lumen embolization, with significant differentiation in material mechanisms, degradation controllability, and imaging compatibility.

AlphaStar Medical has been selected for the Hangzhou Yuhang District’s first batch of innovation and entrepreneurship projects for 2026 and recently received an Excellence Award at the 4th “Zhongyan Cup” Innovation Commercialization Roadshow for its shape memory polymer vascular embolization system. These recognitions validate the company’s technology approach and have drawn industry attention to SMP embolization materials. With support from both investors, the company is accelerating its transition from the laboratory to the clinic.

Based on the advantages of its SMP materials platform, AlphaStar Medical plans to expand its product pipeline beyond aortic embolization devices to cover broader vascular intervention markets. Founder Zhou Qimeng said the company’s philosophy is to build a series of vascular interventional products anchored in materials innovation. Chief Scientist Professor Wu Jingjun noted that shape memory polymer material innovation represents a core pathway to addressing the shortcomings of conventional embolization devices, and that deep integration of medical and engineering disciplines will enable laboratory innovations to reach the operating room, opening new avenues for domestic innovation in vascular intervention. In terms of indication expansion, the company plans to extend beyond aortic embolization into intracranial aneurysms, peripheral aneurysms, and other areas, building a comprehensive embolization solution portfolio covering aortic, neurovascular, and peripheral vascular intervention scenarios, with the goal of achieving breakeven and preparing for IPO around 2030.
